Sneha Ullal is back on set for the web series Law of Attraction

Posted on 3 Jan 2021 04:50:17 GMT - web-series

Sneha Ullal is back on the scene with writer-director Hemant Nilim's web series Law of Attraction. Salman Khan's discovery, who made her debut with Lucky: No Time For Love (2005), is best remembered as Aishwarya Rai's lookalike.

Speaking of which, Ullal said in an interview that the comparisons with Aish don't bother her. "I am so comfortable in my own skin and all those comparisons didn't bother me. Also, that was also their PR strategy on how to describe me. That thing actually emphasised the entire comparison. Otherwise, it may not have been such a big deal," she claimed.

Sneha was recently seen in the thriller show, Expiry Date, which revolves around two couples and extra-marital affairs that they are involved in. The show also features Tony Luke, Madhu Shalini and Ali Reza. It premiered on Zee5 on October 2.

Vidya Malavade: Did not abandon my dream to act

Posted on 3 Jan 2021 01:45:02 GMT - web-series

After a spate of ineffective movies, Vidya Malavade of Chak De! India (2007) fame had written off her Bollywood career. "I wanted to stay away as nothing excited me. Now, the scenario has changed. There are more meaningful opportunities for actors," says the actor who branched into digital entertainment with Vivek Oberoi's The Family.

The boom in the OTT space has given Malavade a new lease of life as an actor. As she puts it, "I may have been absent from the scene, but I did not abandon my dream—acting. I honed my craft; attended workshops, while yoga instilled patience. It made me see the light at the end of every rejection and disappointment."

Malavade was recently seen in ALTBalaji's, Who's Your Daddy 2 wherein she played a loud, Punjabi spa owner. "She is a funky, fun, and loudmouth character, something I had not done before," added the actor, who was a last-minute choice for the series. Incidentally, Malavade was also roped in at the eleventh hour for the Netflix series Mismatched. "I was in the US when I was approached for the show. I flew in directly to the set in Jodhpur, jet-lagged, I read the script through the night and began shooting the next day." Akarsh Khurana's youth-centric show sees her playing an older student, Zeenat Karim, struggling to find her feet and adapt to the new world with millennials. "I found the character close to me in real life." Her hunger to explore unchartered territories and follow a long-lost dream was something Malavade identified with.

Earlier in 2020, she was seen as a police officer in ZEE5's Kaali 2 and as an NRI whose daughter gets kidnapped in Eros Now's Flesh. With four releases in a year, Malavade could not have asked for more. "It is a new beginning for me. I get to play distinct characters in every show."

Here's what Milind Soman has to say on working with his co-star Shilpa Shinde in Paurashpur

Posted on 2 Jan 2021 10:57:10 GMT - web-series

Milind Soman and Shilpa Shinde have shared the screen space for the first time as co-stars in ALTBalaji and ZEE5's recently launched magnum opus, 'Paurashpur'.

Talking fondly about his experience of working with his talented co-star Milind informs, "I had seen her (Shilpa) in the popular television show 'Bhabhiji Ghar Pe Hai' but when I saw her for the first time on the set of Paurashpur, I just thought she was a pretty co-star without realizing she is Shilpa Shinde. I asked somebody who had watched her on television and got to know about it later."

"When I heard Shilpa speaking, her voice sounded quite familiar to me. When I asked that person, which serial she did, they told me 'Bhabhiji Ghar Pe Hai'. I couldn't get her popular dialogue – 'Sahi Pakde Hain' out of my mind, which was very distracting," Milind laughs as he elaborates, "Shilpa is fantastic. I didn't even recognize her when she was dressed up as queen. The persona, aura, and attitude she created for her role was so incredible. It was really great to work with her."

The period-drama series 'Paurashpur' stars legendary actor Annu Kapoor, Shilpa Shinde, Milind Soman, Sahil Salathia, Anantvijay Joshi, Shaheer Sheikh, Poulomi Das, Flora Saini, Aditya Lal, Kashish Rai and Ashmita Bakshi among others.

When Poulomi Das danced for 18 hours at a stretch for Paurashpur

Posted on 1 Jan 2021 04:30:00 GMT - web-series

Actors walking the extra mile to get into the skin of their characters have become a norm. Months before the shoot of the film the actors get into preparing each and every aspect of their characters, be it look, language, mannerisms, etc. Similarly, Poulomi Das too believes in pushing the envelope for her characters.

The gorgeous actress, who portrays the role of Kala, a 'daasi' to the queen in the recently-released epic period-drama Paurashpur by ALTBalaji and ZEE5, feels proud to be associated with a show mounted on such big scale and magnitude.

Interestingly, for one of her scenes in the show, an elaborate dance sequence to be precise, the actress ended up dancing for approximately 18 hours at a stretch. Yes, you read it right!

Informs Poulomi, "There is a very dramatic dance performance in Paurashpur which I had to perform. The dance sequence had a lot of feelings and hand and eye gestures involved which required a lot detailing and finesse. To achieve the perfection, we had to stretch it for those many hours and also there was a sequence where I am dancing inside and outside the water. It was a pretty elaborate thing to execute. I love dancing so I really enjoyed it."

Poulomi will be stealing hearts and breaking rules in the patriarchal kingdom, and that is a big mistake in a realm where no woman should make any mistakes.

The period-drama series, directed by Sachindra Vats, also stars Shilpa Shinde, Milind Soman, Sahil Salathia, Shaheer Sheikh, Annu Kapoor, Anantvijay Joshi, Flora Saini, Aditya Lal, Kashish Rai and Ashmita Bakshi among others.

Watch the episodes of Paurashpur streaming now on ALTBalaji and ZEE5!

Year-ender 2020: The Outsider, The Haunting Of Bly Manor, Locke And Key, JU-ON - Horror shows to binge on!

Posted on 31 Dec 2020 04:20:32 GMT - web-series

The year 2020 was no less than a horror show, don't you agree? The COVID-19 pandemic, the lockdown, and the rest that followed has been a nightmare everyone in the world has been living in so far. Well, finally the year has come to an end, and hopefully, this eerie fest ends with it.

As the winter season is here along with the New Year, put on your warm clothes as we give you a lowdown on the best digital horror shows of 2020. If horror and the supernatural is your scene, then these seven web shows should definitely find a place on your to-watch list!

The Outsider - Disney+ Hotstar

When an insidious supernatural force edges its way into a seemingly straightforward murder investigation of a young boy, it leads a seasoned cop and an unorthodox investigator to question everything they believe in. Based on Stephen Kings' popular novel, The Outsider's suspense will have you at the edge of your seats. Unfolding in a small town, the show has its own shape-shifting demon, which puts the residents under its threat.

Locke And Key - Netflix

Locke And Key, starring a talented cast - Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, hit the web on February 7, 2020, and ever since then, fans couldn't stop talking and obsessing over this teen-drama. Why you ask? We can surely give you more than five reasons, but the most important one why this stays at the top is for its enigma. This one has teen-drama, ghosts, a bit of magic, and to top it all, loads of mystic moments.

Supernatural - Prime Video

The title itself has the dreaded word so you know this show is going to freak you out from the word go. Based on two brothers who witness their mother's paranormal death as kids, the show has been ruling the hearts of the fans since 2005. The show has reached cult classic status with panels at Comic-Con to an anime show and more. The legacy of 15 years finally came to an end with the fifteenth season. In Supernatural, brothers Sam and Dean Winchester (played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles respectively) fight demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings, all the while making you reach for your security blanket. Though the first episode of the final season aired on October 10, 2019, the finale aired on November 19, 2020.

The Walking Dead: The World Beyond - Prime Video

Are you a fan of zombies? If you haven't signed up for the cringe-factor, blood bath and slashers, give this show a miss. This one is surely not for the faint-hearted. This horror series is backed by blood and gore, and The Walking Dead is everything you need and more.

The Haunting Of Bly Manor - Netflix

The Haunting Of Bly Manor, the second season following The Haunting Of Hill House, is a part of the anthology series - The Haunting. It was released on Netflix on October 9, 2020. The horror series shares an eerie love story in London that happened way back in 1987. The Haunting of Bly Manor is an oddly weaved horror story, which has compassion and love as its main plot.

JU-ON: Origins - Netflix

The legendary horror franchise Ju-On shook the world as Netflix Japan released its first-ever horror original, JU-ON: Origins. Starring Yoshiyoshi Arakawa, Yuina Kuroshima, and Ririka, the series premiered on Netflix on July 3, 2020. Filled with gruesome violence, blood, a grisly newborn, the show is said to be one of the most celebrated series in the horror genre.

Lovecraft Country - Netflix

The makers of this show have made sure to give us all-American horror story feels, without wiping off the brilliance of 'The Haunting.' Released to leave us spooked during the Halloween period, this series by Netflix will get the audience hooked.

So, which one are you going to watch first?

The year of the other actor

Posted on 31 Dec 2020 01:38:25 GMT - web-series

Who was the face of 2020 — cinema and series included? No doubt, Pankaj Tripathi! Just look at the year he's had, while the world was reeling in darkness. He offered inimitable lightness of touch across platforms — as the travel agent Tony in Angrezi Medium, Ovi Mahajan Sr in the Hollywood blood-fest Extraction, reprising Kaleen Bhaiya in the desi blood-fest Mirzapur 2. Or playing its opposite, the lovable, colonel father in Gunjan Saxena; carrying forward the immense charm in Anurag Basu's Ludo, and the solid series, Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors.

Likewise, how could you take your eyes off Jaideep Ahlawat in Paatal Lok, or Jitendra Kumar in both Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Panchayat. Or not fall for the easy-going Pratik Gandhi as Harshad Mehta in Scam 1992, or Shreya Chaudhary in Bandish Bandits (even the male lead Ritwik Bhowmik), apart from veterans Naseeruddin Shah, Atul Kulkarni, especially the quiet Sheeba Chaddha.

Leads and even key supporting cast apart, ones who stood out in 2020 though, I think, were second/third row, pretty much unknown actors, in relatively bit parts, shining still, as they got to explore their roles further.

Which is what a series (as against a film) allows for. In that sense, this was the year of the casting director, besides content, being king. I couldn't help but notice with immense joy some fresh faces, who'd be relegated to walk-on parts, or 'junior artistes', if you may, in traditional Bollywood!

Chandan Roy (Vikas), Faisal Malik (Prahlad), Panchayat

Chandan Roy and Faisal Malik - Panchayat
Chandan Roy and Faisal Malik - Panchayat

Also Read: Year-ender 2020: Bobby Deol, Sushmita Sen, Abhishek Bachchan: Bollywood actors who made their digital debuts

Yes, this is the glowingly warm show about the urban gram sachiv (Jitendra Kumar) and the rural prashan pati (the great Raghubir Yadav). But you take away the two adorable bumblers Vikas and Prahlad, who hang with the lead characters, and Panchayat (on Amazon Prime Video) would lose half its punch (lines/moments)! They're so good. But who are they? Exactly! Hope to see more of them.

Niharika Lyra Dutt (Sara), Swastika Mukherjee (Dolly), Paatal Lok

Paatal Lok (on Amazon Prime Video) is a deathly gritty series about deceitful, greedy men and the madness they're capable of. For heaven's sake, you get hit really hard by Sanjiv Mehra (Neeraj Kabi), Hathi Ram (Jaideep Ahlawat), young Ansari (Ishwak Singh), or quite literally, Hathoda Tyagi (Abhishek Banerjee). And then the two phenomenal women show up — Sanjiv's young love-interest Sara (Niharika Lyra Dutt), and his disturbed wife Dolly (Swastika Mukherjee) — the softness of their screen presence blows you away, way more. How's that even possible? Evidently is.

Hemant Kher (Ashwin), Scam 1992

Hemant Kher - Scam 1992
Hemant Kher - Scam 1992

What's there not to endlessly admire about the ensemble cast of the financial thriller on SonyLIV, where everyone brilliantly plays somebody who existed in real life — from BSE's Big Bull Harshad Mehta (Pratik Gandhi), business reporter Sucheta Dalal (Shreya Dhanwanthary), down to the sharp CBI officer Raghavan (Rajat Kapoor). But Harshad's earnest-looking brother, Ashwin (Hemant Kher) — man, did they get the actual guy (who's alive) to play the part, or what? That's what I thought. He's that great!

Also Read: Year-ender 2020: From Tanhaji to Baaghi 3, how this year fared for Bollywood

Rytasha Rathore (Gia), Masaba Masaba

Sure the quasi-reality series Masaba Masaba has got to be about Masaba, and in equal measure her mom Neena Gupta. And then, on occasion, in this six-episode Netflix show, Masaba's friend Gia walks into the screen, performing like there's no camera before her, and I can't help but wonder: Why haven't I seen her before? Or have I!

Dibyendu Bhattacharya (DSP Ghosh), Undekhi

Dibyendu Bhattacharya - Undekhi
Dibyendu Bhattacharya - Undekhi

Ghosh Babu is the sort of a portly yin to the yang of muscular Haryanvi/Punjabi drunk affluent goons hosting a wedding in Manali over yet another crime series, Undekhi (on SonyLIV). The entire cast stands out for pulling off through performances, what portions of the script lacks in its coherence, sometimes. You notice gems of a turn — from Papaji (Harsh Chhaya), daughter-in-law to be (Apeksha Singh), her videographer friend (Ayn Zoya), her fiancé (Ankur Rathee), his badass brother from another mother, Rinku (Surya Sharma).... But Bengali DSP Ghosh (Dibyendu Bhattacharya) has all your attention — through and through!

Anupria Goenka (Nikhat), Criminal Justice 2

No, I can't remember Anupria Goenka from Padmaavat, just noticing it on her IMDb. Likewise, she was more or less a fleeting presence (by way of impact) in Asur (on Voot ), and you watched her in Aashram (MX Player) in the same year. Once she's familiar to the audience from Criminal Justice 1, you catch her so naturally matching wits with Pankaj Tripathi on Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors (on Disney+Hotstar) and go: What a find! This is to take away nothing from the star of the show, Kirti Kulhari, widening her range from the breezy Four More Shots Please, with what's probably the most painfully felt performance of the year. And, hell, how on-point is Jisshu Sengupta as the top lawyer.

Also Read: Year-ender 2020: Eat, sleep, workout, repeat; here's how B-town celebs invented new ways to stay fit

Isha Talwar (Madhuri) in Mirzapur 2

Without an exception, everyone on Amazon Prime Video's iconic Mirzapur series is by now a star in their own right, known as well by their screen names — Guddu (Ali Fazal), Munna (Divyenndu Sharma), Bablu (Vikrant Massey), Beena Ji (Rasika Dugal), Golu (Shweta Tripathi)… Yet, Isha Talwar shows up as a young politician Madhuri Yadav in Season 2, with a quiet strut, and damn, you sit up, and take notice.

Vikas Kumar (ACP Khan), Ankur Bhatia (Sangram), Aarya

Ram Madhvani's delightfully dark, authentic adaptation of Dutch series Penoza (on Disney+Hotstar) of course gave Sushmita Sen a new lease of life, in a heavy part that she probably wasn't offered even at her peak. Sikander Kher's solid too. But I'm talking about discovering faces. And, well, how do you replicate the swag coupled with vulnerability of the cop (Vikas Kumar) investigating a drug/murder case, and the rich brat (Ankur Bhatia), navigating the law. Blown, totally.

Riddhi Dogra (Nusrat), Asur

Of course Asur on Voot Select is Arshad Warsi's comeback, in every way. And a launch-pad of sorts for young Barun Sobti. Like with all the major Indian series, the ensemble cast is killing it too. Sometimes though, I suspect, it's just about a presence on screen — the fact that they're there; not even doing or saying much, but looking every bit in the moment. That's what viscerally draws you in towards them. That was Riddhi Dogra as a mid-level CBI officer to me. Just there!

A post shared by Sonnalli Seygall (Sonali) (@sonnalliseygall)

Sonnalli confessed in a media interaction earlier how she has been planning to reach heights and come up with different roles. After the success of her last release Jai Mummy Di, the actress has been getting multiple offers. "Ever since the trailer launch, I've read four scripts in two weeks, and the kind of roles that are being offered to me are very exciting and something I've never done. I haven't finalised anything yet, but I'm going to do that soon. I have four really good options to choose from," she claimed.

She also confessed how she desires to work in an action drama. "I would love to explore action. I feel I'll be really good at it. I like to stay fit, so I think my body type is good for action. I've learnt martial arts, too. There are a lot of international projects that really inspire me, like 'Kill Bill' or 'Lucy' with 'Scarlett Johansson'."

Year-ender 2020: The Boys, Upload, The Crown - 7 best international shows this year

Posted on 30 Dec 2020 03:10:00 GMT - web-series

There is no dearth of good content on the internet. OTT platforms have become treasure troves of exciting web shows, so it's quite difficult to pick just one, or even two, that we loved. As 2020 draws to a close, we take a look at seven of the best, most fascinating international web shows that had us hooked this year.

The Crown Season 4 - Netflix

Season 4 of the acclaimed historical drama, The Crown, was released in November 2020. If you're a fan of period dramas, especially those that chronicle the life and times of the British royalty, then this show is a must-watch. The fourth season of The Crown takes us through 1979 to the early 1990s and includes the late Margaret Thatcher's tenure as prime minister and Lady Diana Spencer's marriage to Prince Charles. Emma Corrin plays Diana, and her nuanced performance will surely remind you of the princess herself. Not to mention her uncanny resemblance to Prince William and Harry's mum that will not go unnoticed!

Bridgerton - Netflix

Well, this is another period drama series produced by none other than the fabulous Shonda Rhimes. Rhimes is the genius behind popular shows like Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and Scandal. Bridgerton premiered on December 25, 2020, and has already become one of the most-watched web shows on Netflix. Bridgerton gives us a glimpse into the secretly scandalous and highly competitive world of London high society -- all you'll need to make your weekend a tad bit more fun is a tub of popcorn and this show streaming non-stop on your telly!

The Undoing - Disney+ Hotstar

Based on the 2014 novel 'You Should Have Known' by Jean Hanff Korelitz, The Undoing features two of the most brilliant Hollywood actors -- Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. It's a psychological thriller miniseries that will have you on the edge of your seat and make you wish it had more than one season. Released in October 2020, The Undoing follows the story of Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman), a psychologist, whose husband Jonathan (Hugh Grant), is linked to the death of Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis), another parent at Reardon, their children's private school. Full of twists and turns, this series will keep you guessing until the very end.

The Mandalorian Season 2 - Disney+ Hotstar

If you've followed the Star Wars franchise growing up, or even if you haven't, The Mandalorian is a science fiction series that you won't regret watching. Season 2 of the space Western show premiered on Disney+ Hotstar in October 2020, and a third season is in pre-production. The Mandalorian is the story of Din Djarin, a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. The Family Man is an edgy, action-drama series, which tells the story of a middle-class man, Srikant Tiwari, who works for a special cell of the National Investigation Agency. The series plots Srikant's tight-rope walk as he struggles to strike a balance between his secretive low paying, high-pressure, high-stakes job and being a husband and father. This is as much a satirical take on the geopolitics of the region as it is the story of a middle class guy who is a world class spy.
